Frequently Asked Questions
Buying Zeo
New to Zeo? Here are answers to questions you might have.
- Is Zeo still available?
-
As of early 2013, Zeo Inc. the US based manufacturers have been looking to restructure following financial difficulties. They have since gone in to administration and it remains to be seen whether the assets will be relaunched by any potential new owners. Stock has not been available since this situation unfolded and since June, the .com website can no longer be reached. This .co.uk website is run by Intus Healthcare, UK based sleep experts and we are/were the UK/EU distributors for Zeo. We are still very much in business but without Zeo Inc. being operational, there is currently unfortunately little we can do for our own UK/EU customers, let alone any of the world-wide Zeo users or those interested in Zeo who may have been trying to access myZeo.com. Chances are your headbands need replacing but unfortunately we have none. As far as we know, none are being made at this moment either. We are currently leaving this site up in the hope the product will find a new manufacturer who can relaunch the range so we can go back to helping you all sleep better. It's a shame this situation is how it is but it's entirely out of our hands.

- How can I pay for my order?
-

You can pay by PayPal, by credit or debit card through PayPal even if you don't have a PayPal account or by bank transfer and phone. Note that PayPal payments allow us to process your order faster but we understand (from experience processing tens of thousands of orders in recent years) that some may prefer to pay over the phone or by bank. Either way, please enter your address and order details online and proceed through the checkout where you will find all the required instructions such as bank details, ordering telephone number etc. If you pay through a PayPal confirmed account you can usually expect your order to be despatched same day. Payments show on your statement as paid to Intus Healthcare, the UK distributors of Zeo. Note that Zeo is also available on Amazon.co.uk.
- How does back-ordering work exactly?
-
From time to time we may temporarily run out of stock. Zeo is often featured on high-profile television shows and elsewhere the national media, which can lead to sudden high demands. However much we try and anticipate these, sometimes we receive even more orders than we bargained for and run out. During those periods you are able to back order your item, which means that they day we receive stock your order will be despatched as a matter of priority. This is usually no longer than 5 working days. Please contact us for an more precise ETA before placing a back order so that we can give you the latest information.
- Is customer support based in the UK?
-
Yes. From late September 2011 onwards, Zeo UK is run by Intus Healthcare based in Surrey, UK. As sleep experts, we will be able to deal with any enquiries, pre and post sale, delivery, returns or warranty related and even about your sleep data. You can always reach Intus within office hours on normal working days. E-mails and calls are promptly answered. In the unlikely event we can't deal with your query from the UK, we can always escalate it to Zeo ni the USA.
- Where do I find the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach?
-
As of September 26, 2011 the Zeo Sleep Coach has been renamed as Zeo Sleep Manager Bedside. It's the same alarm clock type bedside display with all the same features and benefits. It was simply renamed to make room for the new Zeo Sleep Manager Mobile which uses a similar headband, but it communicates with a smartphone instead of the bedside display unit.
- If I decide I do not want Zeo, how can I return it?
-
We welcome you to join the Zeo experience, but we understand that Zeo may not be for everyone. Below are the technical requirements for returning Zeo.
Zeo Inc. offers a 30-day money back guarantee for the Zeo Sleep Manager. You may return your Zeo for any reason within 30 days from the date of shipping and receive a full refund, but you are responsible for paying for shipping back to Intus in the UK and ensuring you send it complete, with all packaging, and securely back to us. Contact Customer Care within the 30 day window to request your return. All returns must reference a Return Material Authorisation ("RMA") number. In order to get an RMA, just contact Zeo@IntusHealthcare.eu or call Customer Care on 0844 504 2002 Monday through Friday 9 AM – 6 PM UK time for further instructions or help with the Zeo Sleep Manager. E-mail is best, as we will need your request in writing, and will issue the RMA number in writing too.
Returned merchandise must include all original accessories, literature, documentation and packaging in the same saleable condition in which you received it. Damaged merchandise, cosmetically or otherwise, may be subject to a restocking fee equal to 30% of the price paid (not including taxes).
Refunds for returns will only cover the purchase price and any sales taxes charged. Refunds will be processed within 30 days of receipt of your returned product, in the same form of payment as your original purchase. Refunds will not be made for any shipping and handling charges. You are responsible for and must prepay all return shipping charges and shall assume all risk of all loss or damage to the product while in transit to Zeo UK (Intus). Merchandise must be received by Intus within 14 days after issuance of the RMA. Zeo retains the right to refuse delivery of merchandise returned without a valid RMA number or merchandise received greater than 14 days subsequent to issuance of the RMA.
- Will Zeo work with a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure machine)?
-
Many people find that their CPAP headgear does not interfere with the Zeo Headband. As long as the headband can be worn on the forehead without sliding around or falling off, it will collect sleep data successfully. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using any other equipment with Zeo.
If you would like more information on how to wear the Zeo Headband, you can also take a look at our headband tutorial video.
- Can Zeo be used to track my sleep disorder?
-
Zeo is neither a medical device nor a medical program and it is not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of any sleep disorders, including apnoea.
Having said that, anyone can benefit from learning about how their habits and lifestyle choices may affect their sleep, and can use this information to make informed choices. Things such as consistent bed and rise times, or coffee and stress affect each person’s sleep differently. With Zeo you can learn how they affect you personally.
The following is a short list of the things the Zeo Headband will track when you put it on at night:
- Total Z — how long you really sleep each night, counting any perceived and unperceived awakenings that we can detect
- Time to Z — the time it took you to fall asleep
- Time in Wake and Times Woken
- Total amount of REM, Light and Deep sleep
After their clinical diagnosis and treatment by the sleep clinic, people with insomnia, delayed or advanced sleep phase syndrome, shift-work disorder and sleep apnoea may find Zeo an interesting complementary tool which can help them remain on track with their official treatment.
- Is Zeo covered by health insurance or available on the NHS?
-
We aren’t familiar with any insurance plans that currently reimburse for Zeo — Zeo is not a medical device nor a medical program and it is not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of any sleep disorders. As it is very much a consumer device as oppose to a medical device, the NHS does not supply Zeo either.
- Is Zeo Mac-compatible?
-
You should have no problem using Zeo with a Mac. Since the myZeo coaching program is online, Zeo doesn’t require any software installation. Uploading sleep data does require a connection to the internet and either an SD reader or USB port on your computer. In addition, the coaching website requires a recent version of Adobe Flash.
- Is Zeo safe?
-
The Zeo Sleep Manager, including the headband, has been laboratory tested and complies with all standards for digital and wireless devices. More specifically, Zeo meets or exceeds US and international standards for safety including the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the European Commission (which oversees the CE mark) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
In order to meet these standards, Zeo was required to comply with the standard for human exposure to radio frequency fields. The emission level was and is so low that the test was not able to be conducted (in fact it is twenty-five times lower than the minimum level for the test). To put it another way, the Zeo Headband emits one one-thousandth the radio wave energy of a common mobile phone.
- Can multiple people use Zeo?
-
Zeo is designed for one person to use at a time since it can only record one person’s sleep data per night. In addition, each Zeo is associated with one myZeo.com My Sleep account. That said, you and a friend can always trade off nights of sleeping with Zeo. You just have to be careful to not confuse the data for the guided coaching program or analytical online tools. But you can use multiple Zeo Sleep Manager products at the same time within the same bedroom. Whether it's the bedside or mobile headband, it knows which device it is paired with so you can compete for ZQ scores with your partner without fear of swapping data.
- Is the headband comfortable?
-
In general, people find the headband very comfortable. In fact, most people are surprised by how lightweight and small it is. We recommend that users give the headband two to three nights to find the right velcro tab positions on the straps and get used to the newness factor. After that, most people say that they don’t notice it anymore.
That said, there are some people who feel uncomfortable wearing hats, earrings, caps or anything else around their head during the day, and not surprisingly, they also have difficulties with the headband at night. Zeo comes with a risk-free, 30-day money back guarantee, just in case you have difficulties with the headband (or anything else). If you really can't adjust within 30 nights, simply request a return, or give the gift of good sleep to somebody you care about.
- Who should use the coaching program?
-
The Zeo coaching program is for anyone who wants to understand how to get a better night full of sleep. It provides guidance and motivation to help you work towards pinpointing and minimising your unique Sleep Stealers, whether they are affecting your ability to fall asleep, stay asleep throughout the night, or wake up feeling more refreshed.
The coaching program was developed with our Scientific Advisory Board based on highly-researched and scientifically proven strategies to get a better night’s rest. The personalised coaching emails, along with the research in the Sleep Information Center represent the full extent of our current coaching program. If you would like more specific analysis or insight into your sleep, we recommend you speak with us here at Intus Healthcare, your GP or a sleep doctor. We should also remind you that Zeo is neither a medical device nor medical program and is not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of sleep disorders. If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, consult your GP.
- How accurate is Zeo?
-
Accuracy is highly important to us. We have conducted a number of studies on the precision of our SoftWave™ sensors, comparing them to other sleep tracking technologies. You can review the preliminary results of a larger study, which is very nearly at the end of data collection. Here are the links to the abstracts:
- “Evaluation of a Portable Monitor for Staging Sleep” (PDF)
- “Performance of a Wireless Dry Sensor System in Automatically Monitoring Sleep and Wakefulness” (PDF)
You can also take a look at the results of another study, conducted and reported by prominent sleep scientist Dr. David White. His study showed excellent concordance with Zeo in phasing sleep. You can find it here:

These reports were presented at the annual meetings of Associated Professional Sleep Societies in 2008 and 2009. More studies are in progress.
- Can I still get Guided Coaching?
-
Effective May 1, 2011, we've rolled the 7 Step Sleep Fitness program into the base Zeo package. This will be an automatic change for all customers who had previously been paying a subscription fee, regardless of purchase location. As long as you own Zeo you have access to the guided coaching program and will not be charged for future subscription fees. For current users who are not engaged in coaching, simply visit the coaching tab at mysleep.myzeo.com to begin the 7 Steps to Sleep Fitness program.
- What is your delivery policy?
-
Generally orders are being sent out within 1-2 business from the date they are placed, often even same day. Orders must be placed by 1:00 PM UK time Monday to Friday for same day despatch to be a possibility. Orders are not sent on Saturdays, Sundays and UK bank holidays.
Zeo UK keeps delivery options simple. We only use fast services like Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded, Special & International Signed For and InterLink Express couriers.
Zeo Sleep Manager Bedside and Mobile will always have to be signed for so you have to enter a delivery address where you generally expect somebody to be in during office hours to accept the parcel. This can be at work, a neighbour or with family but has to be entered when ordering and cannot be changed once sent out. The person signing for the parcel should first inspect the packaging for obvious damage caused by the courier/post in transit. If you are not in when they attempt delivery, a card will be left and it is up to you to respond to this calling card to arrange redelivery or pick up from the local post office or courier depot.

- How can I track polyphasic sleep using Zeo?
Polyphasic sleeping is the practice of sleeping in several long naps throughout the 24 hour day, rather than laying down for 6-8 hours all at once. While it’s currently not possible to reflect your polyphasic sleeping with the myZeo online due to limitations of the website’s software, you CAN successfully track and display polyphasic naps using the Zeo Decoder Viewer.
This means that any nap OVER 10 minutes long will be tracked, allowing you to see your sleep totals for all the usual sleep phases when you are following a polyphasic lifestyle.
How to Prepare for Polyphasic Sleep – Zeo style
- Navigate to http://zeodecoderview.sourceforge.net/
- Download the viewer software and the firmware to view your data: you have to agree to the terms and conditions to get these.
- Export your Zeo data from myZeo
- Follow instructions for getting started with your data here: http://zeodecoderview.sourceforge.net/starting.html
- Use the Zeo forum if you run into trouble, have any questions, or want to explore others experiences
- Is the headband comfortable?
In general, people find the headband very comfortable. In fact, most people are surprised by how lightweight and small it is. We recommend that users give the headband two to three nights to find the right size and get used to the newness factor. After that, most people say that they don’t notice it anymore.

- What is SmartWake?
The SmartWake alarm may make it a little easier to get out of bed in the morning. SmartWake will look to wake you from a "natural awakening point" when the brain is highly active. More specifically, Zeo will prevent you from waking from Deep sleep, and instead will look for a moment when you transition into and out of REM sleep. To do this, Zeo may wake you as early as a half-hour before your set alarm time, but it will never wait to wake you after your alarm time. You can also choose the size of the window that you would like to be woken during, anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes.
To learn more about SmartWake check out our blog post.
- Will Zeo work with a CPAP machine?
Many people find that their CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) headgear does not interfere with the Zeo Headband.
- Is the amount of REM or Deep Sleep I’m getting normal?
Deep and REM sleep are the times during the night when the body undergoes the most physical and mental restoration. Deep sleep generally occurs within the first third of the night, while REM sleep occurs mostly in the final third of the night. This means that in order for your body to get the Restorative sleep it needs, you need to make sure you sleep for the right duration, and that you have few factors stealing from your sleep.
Everyone requires a different amount of sleep (Restorative or total) each night — there isn’t a “normal” amount, though if you check out the Sleep Age wheel that came with Zeo, you can find typical averages and ranges based on age. A good way to figure out how much sleep you need is by considering how you feel during the day. Keep recording your sleep journal and uploading your data, and participating in the online coaching program — these will all help you learn how to get a night of rest that’s good for you!
- What is ZQ?
ZQ is a measure of one night of sleep that takes into account Total Z, Restorative sleep, and Disrupted sleep. ZQ can range from 0 to 120 or more depending on factors like age, gender, stress level, etc. Getting a higher ZQ doesn’t always mean that you’re better off, as ZQ doesn’t take into account accumulated sleep debt or factors that could affect daily life.
- What is "Time in REM"?
Time in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is the length of time you were in REM sleep. REM sleep is essential for memory formation and storage, as well as for emotional processing, which adds to your ZQ score. Studies have shown that REM sleep helps us to learn and develop new skills. Generally during this phase of sleep heart rate and breathing rate are variable, and the body ceases to regulate body temperature; that means you won’t shiver or sweat.
- How do I know what factors are affecting my sleep phases?
Zeo can help you determine which factors may be affecting your sleep. Just sleep with Zeo everyday and fill out the online Sleep Journal. The Sleep Journal will allow you to track the 7 Sleep Stealers™, the most common factors that can detract from your sleep quality. The tools within myZeo will then combine your sleep data with your Sleep Journal information to show you trends in your sleep and what may be affecting it.
- I got a high ZQ, but still don't feel like I slept well. Why?
ZQ is a measure of one night of sleep that takes into account Total Z, Restorative sleep, and Disrupted sleep. Getting a higher ZQ doesn’t always mean that you’re better off, as ZQ doesn’t take into account accumulated sleep debt or factors that could affect daily life.
For more information regarding relationship between morning feel and ZQ, I would recommend reading our article "ZQ vs Feel" in the Sleep Information Center. You can view the article here.
- What is the sleep wheel?
The Sleep Wheel included with your Zeo is designed to show the relationship between age and sleep. More specifically, it tells you the typical amounts of Deep, REM, and total sleep and average ZQ scores for people of all ages. Keep in mind though, that these are averages and average ranges, and each person is unique.
- Can Zeo be used to track my sleep disorder?
Zeo is neither a medical device nor a medical program and it is not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of any sleep disorders, including sleep apnoea.
- Is the amount of Deep/Light/REM sleep I get normal?
That's a great question, and it's one that even sleep science doesn't have a solid answer to. Deep and REM sleep are the times during the night when the body undergoes the most physical and mental restoration. Deep sleep general occurs mostly within the first third of the night, while REM sleep occurs mostly within the final third of the night. This means that, in order to get the Restorative sleep your body needs, you should be getting to bed at the right times and waking up in the morning with a consistent and healthy schedule.
Sometimes Deep and REM sleep can be affected by what we do during the day (such as drinking caffeine or alcohol, or by exercising), so be sure to keep an eye out for any sleep stealers that could be chipping away at Restorative sleep. Each person requires a different amount of sleep (Restorative or total) each night - there isn't a "normal" amount. If you check out the Sleep Age wheel that came with Zeo, you can find typical averages based on age.
- Is Zeo Mac-compatible?
You should have no problem running Zeo with an Apple computer. Since the myZeo coaching program is online, Zeo doesn’t require any software installation. Uploading sleep data does require a connection to the internet and either an SD or USB port on your computer. In addition, the coaching website requires the latest version of Adobe Flash.
- Where does the data used in the sleep wheel/beta tools come from?
The data in the Sleep Wheel came from a massive study done in 2004 that looked at how sleep changed over age. The data from the Weekly and Nightly Sleep Report (beta tools) comes from DOZER (Data Observations of the Zeo Extraction Registry. This is an Institutional Review Board approved registry of de-identified data collected from users who have uploaded sleep data to Zeo.
- What is "Restorative Sleep"?
Zeo defines "Restorative sleep" as Deep sleep and REM sleep. Deep and REM sleep are the times during the night when the body undergoes the most physical and mental restoration. More specifically, Deep sleep is important for growth, restoring muscle and building immunity. REM sleep is essential for organizing memory to better apply what you learn.
- What is a sleep graph?
You can find your own night’s sleep graph on your bedside display and on myZeo. It is a graph that summarizes your personal pattern of sleep phases across a night. These patterns are laid out and organized into a readable sleep graph. The time of night will appear at the top of your graph and will be shown in two-hour stretches of time, increasing from left to right. For example 12am…..2am……….4am………6am……….8am. The type of sleep is indicated by the height of the bars. On the left side of the sleep graph will be four letters, which represent the four phases of sleep. (W=wake, R=REM, L=light, D=deep). As you read your graph you will be able to see which phase of sleep you were in at various points during the night, in 5-minute blocks.
- What are the computer requirements for Zeo?
You should have no problem running Zeo with an Apple computer. Since the myZeo coaching program is online, Zeo doesn’t require any software installation. Uploading sleep data does require a connection to the internet and either an SD or USB port on your computer. In addition, the coaching website requires the latest version of Adobe Flash.
- What is "Time to Z"?
Time to Z represents how long it actually took you to fall asleep. This is the time it takes to fall asleep after you place the headband on and the headband icon shows on the display. The time it takes you to fall asleep will not affect your ZQ score.
- What does "Times Woken" mean?
Times Woken is the number of times you woke up during the night, defined as a disruption that lasts 2 minutes or more. Times woken is considered one component of what we call Disrupted sleep, which detracts from your overall ZQ score.
- Is Zeo safe?
The Zeo Personal Sleep Coach, including the headband, has been laboratory tested and complies with all standards for digital and wireless devices. To put it another way, the Zeo Headband emits one one-thousandth the radio wave energy of a common cell phone.
- Why is SmartWake set to 30 minutes before my alarm?
The SmartWake feature can be modified to wake you 0 to 45 minutes before your alarm time. During that time period, there is a high likelihood that there will be an optimal time for you to wake up!
- Where did the name Zeo come from?
Zeo was inspired by the Greek deity Eos, goddess of the dawn. Eos rides a chariot into the night sky and lifts the veil of darkness so the day can begin. We added some extra “sleep” to Eos and created “Zeo.”
- What is "Total Z"?
Total Z is how long you actually slept during the night. It is your total sleep time and does not include any of the time you were awake during the night. More total sleep time increases your chances of getting more Deep and REM sleep, the restorative phases so important to feeling alert and refreshed. Total Z plays the biggest role in determining ZQ.
- What is "Time in Wake"?
This is the length of time you were awake after having fallen asleep. Time in wake is considered a part of Disrupted sleep, which detracts from your overall ZQ score.
Wake is a natural part of sleep; it is very common to wake up either as you enter or exit REM sleep while transitioning out of or into Light sleep. Zeo will record awakenings that last 2 minutes or more. Many people think they were awake when they were actually asleep, and vice versa: read more about it here. Also, sleep science tells us that depending on the level of brain activity, there can be many similarities between signals while awake and asleep.
- What is "Disrupted Sleep"?
Any sleep phase that is interrupted during the night by a prolonged period of wakefulness would be considered Disrupted Sleep. A good way to track any potential periods of Disrupted sleep is to pay attention to Time in Wake and the Times Woken in a given night.
- What is "Time in Deep"?
Time in Deep is the length of time you were in Deep sleep. During Deep sleep, our breathing rate and blood pressure decrease, and we enter Slow Wave sleep, when our brain waves become slow and large. This sleep phase is important for physical and emotional restoration. During Deep sleep, the body releases growth hormones for healing and growth, while the immune system strengthens and renews itself. Generally during this phase of sleep heart rate slows and is consistent, breathing rate is constant and deep, and the body continues to regulate body temperature but tends to decrease.
- How old do you have to be to use Zeo?
While the technology behind Zeo has not been tested on the under 12 age group, there is no reason to think it would be dramatically different. The coaching program was also designed with over 12 year olds in mind, but many of the tips and techniques will also apply to people under 12 as well.
- What is "Time in Light"?
Time in Light is the length of time you were in Light Sleep. Light sleep is the phase of sleep that accounts for the most time during the night. Generally during this phase of sleep, breathing rate is variable, eye movements stop, heart rate slows and is consistent, and the body continues to regulate body temperature but tends to decrease. Time in light contributes greatly to Total Sleep Time (almost 50%), thus playing a big role in determining Total Z.
- 4 out of 5 Zeo users reported improved sleep quality
- 3 out of 4 Zeo users got more Deep or REM sleep
- 70% of Zeo users reported getting an average of one hour more sleep
